After working for four ad agencies, three in-house companies, and running my own design studio for 16 years, I have found that three concepts shape my philosophy about design. First, regardless of scope, each project deserves to be well-designed. For example, one of my most meaningful projects was for the local Alzheimers foundation. The project was an interactive exhibit for caretakers of Alzheimers patients. We had only a $200 budget and the project would never win a design award, but to the people affected by Alzheimers, it was priceless. Second, the client should be proud of the projects produced for their company. My job is to make the client look good. A few years ago the wife of a client told me that she had never seen her husband so proud of this company since he started to work with me. Happy client, happy designer. Third, the custom needs to feel a spark when viewing the design that makes them want to pick it up, click on it, or forward it. During one marketing campaign I designed, the owner was upset that all the posters I created for him were being stolen off the wall. To me it was music to my ears. The best compliment I could have as a designer was that people so loved my work, they were taking it. I look forward to each project because, like people, no two are ever alike.
